Great Big Green Week x Loneliness Awareness Week: Finding connection through community and climate action

By Helen Meech, Executive Director of The Climate Coalition, organisers of Great Big Green Week

This June, as part of the UK’s Month of Community, Great Big Green Week (7 to 15 June) is celebrating the power of people coming together to protect nature and take action on climate. It is the UK’s biggest celebration of community-led environmental action, with events happening across the country.

Great Big Green Week is proud to sit alongside Loneliness Awareness Week (9 to 15 June), recognising the common ground between the two. When we connect through shared interests, we strengthen our communities and build meaningful relationships. Coming together to plant pollinator-friendly flowers, host a swap event or clean up a local green space not only helps the planet, it brings people together in a spirit of shared purpose.

Every Great Big Green Week event is different, just like the varied and creative ways people take part in Loneliness Awareness Week. From nature walks to community art projects, each offers the chance to connect through something positive. And evidence shows that meaningful connections in local community settings reduce isolation and contribute to a great sense of belonging and shared purpose. We all need this more than ever as the campaign to address loneliness and social isolation reminds us.

Great Big Green Week events are led by local community organisations, businesses, councils, charities, sports clubs and faith groups. Events are hosted by teachers, bus drivers, artists, community groups, places of worship, libraries, builders and more. The groups taking part reflect the diversity of communities across the UK. Everyone is welcome, and everyone has something to contribute.

Together, we are not only helping the environment. We are creating space for people to feel seen, heard and part of something hopeful.
